Established in 1953, Nirmala College, Muvattupuzha is a first-grade college affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. It is a minority Christian institution governed and managed by the Corporate Educational Agency, Syrian Catholic Diocese of Kothamangalam. In strict compliance with the vision of the founding fathers, the college has served the community, irrespective of caste, creed and colour and has contributed to the world quite large a number of value-based Nirmalites. Her performance in academic and non-academic activities has been acknowledged by the NIRF rankings 2017 in the form of its position on the 91st among the list of colleges in the country. In addition, the college has been bestowed with the prestigious ‘Star College’ status by the Department of Bio-Technology (DBT), Government of India, in recognition of the advancements made by the college in the field of science education, with a handsome financial grant. All science departments of the college are supported by the DST- FIST scheme.
The college is located on a hill top at the doorstep of high ranges in the western ghats. The campus is spread over 53 acres of land with state of the art facilities for a constructive learning experience. The college has now grown to become a centre of learning that offers graduation in 16 disciplines, post-graduation in 14 and research facility in six. The college also runs 17 certificate/ diploma programmes. The IGNOU Study Centre, functioning in the college, offers 11 UG and 04 PG Programmes. The Nirmala Civil Service Academy, functioning in the college, caters to the needs of civil service aspirants.
The college attracts quality students from the length and breadth of the state. Some students come even from other states. Out of 72 full time faculty, 45 are Ph.D. holders. Thirty six research guides are supervising the Ph.D. Fellows in six disciplines. As many as 52 research scholars have, so far, been awarded Ph.Ds. Thirty four research projects have been completed during the last five years. And nearly 150 seminars and lectures were organised during the said period. The college has been successfully publishing a bi-annual research journal “Science and Society” for the last 15 years. The teachers publish in national and international journals and present papers in national and international seminars/ conferences.
The college has six auditoriums and 18 conference/ seminar halls of which eight are air conditioned. It has 34 class rooms with ICT facilities. The laboratories are equipped with modern equipment. We do have sufficient playgrounds for the physical training of the students. The fully automated library offers computerised catalogue search service through the Library Management Software called ‘Libsoft’. The library provides remote access to e-resources through its digital library wing called Nirmala College Digital Library. The library has nearly 82000 books. The college has a favourable student computer ratio of 6.27 with 431 computer terminals spread over six computer labs. High speed internet connectivity is another attraction of the campus. The English Language Laboratory with 30 web enabled computers is a centre for training students in the use of correct English. The college has a well furnished guest house with 15 rooms, four ladies hostels, one boys hostel, two sports hostels, Fitness Centre, Reprographic Centre, Yoga Centre, Digital Theatre, Folklore Musuem, Public Call Centre, Stationery Store, Kiosks, Cafeteria, Post Office, Bank, two ATM Centres, Medical Room, Herbal Garden, Butterfly Garden, Vermi Compost Plants, Bio-gas units, Aquatic Farm, Mushroom Farm, Rain Water Harvesting unit, Solar Panels, Staff Co-operative Society, Electronic Equipment Maintenance Centre, Prayer Hall, Counselling Centre and special amenities for the differently abled.
The college has a well functioning Career Guidance and Placement Cell under the title, “Nirmala Institute of Competitive Studies” (NICS) which regularly conducts coaching classes for competitive examinations like UGC-NET, Bank tests and PSC/UPSC/SSC examinations. A good number of outgoing students get placed in one job or the other. The college also has institutional mechanisms like NSS, NCC, Walk With a Scholar Scheme, Business Incubation Centre, and facilities for remedial coaching and soft skill development.
Blessed by the Almighty, with the fortress of a strong Governing Body, Staff Council, IQAC, committed teaching and non-teaching staff, vibrant Alumni Association, Parent Teacher Association and well intentioned students, the college is marching towards greater heights.
