National Service scheme (NSS)

The National Service scheme was started in Nirmala College on 3 January 1972. Prof. C.J Thomas (Dept. of Commerce) was the first programme officer of the unit. Mini camps, special camps, leadership camps, career guidance camps, intercollegiate and interuniversity camps, symposia, debate, different competitions, blood group identification camps, AIDS awareness programme and adoption of village are the various activities undertaken by our units over the years.

The NSS is part of the Development of Youth Affairs and Sports under the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India. It is a voluntary organization for students and the teachers. The NSS has been introduced in colleges and universities all over India in response to the Kothari Commission’s recommendation that education should be oriented to the social needs by involving students in service to the community.

A student volunteer who has completed 240 hrs of work and attended a special camp during the course of two years is eligible for NSS Certificate from the University. This certificate gives weightage for higher studies and is an additional qualification for appointment in public services.
