CHEMNEXUS- CHEMISTRY ASSOCIATION INAUGURATION

The Chemistry Association Inauguration held on 27th August 2024 was a highly successful event marked by the esteemed presence of Chief Guest Dr. Ajish K.R., Asst. Professot, Department of Chemistry CMS College, Kottayam. Following the inauguration, a series of cultural events showcased the talents of students in dance and music, creating a lively and enjoyable atmosphere.

 

WORLD OZONE DAY CELEBRATIONS

On September 12th, in celebration of World Ozone Day, our department hosted a series of engaging activities to promote environmental awareness. These included a Science Quiz, Crossword and Word Wheel Puzzles competitions. The event was a resounding success, creating awareness and creativity while conveying our collective responsibility to preserve the ozone layer and protect our planet.

 

CHEMCARNIVAL – EXHIBITION

The Chemistry Exhibition for school students was successfully conducted on 3rd January 2025.’ Enthusiastic student participants demonstrated experiments and explained scientific concepts in an engaging manner. Various interactive stalls like Aqua alchemy, The curous chemist, Chemistry in everyday life and The Secret Chemist’s Chamber were there. The event attracted a large number of visitors, including students and teachers from different schools. Hands-on activities and live demonstrations made the exhibition both educational and entertaining. Overall, the exhibition was a great success, sparking curiosity and interest in chemistry among young learners.

 

INVITED LECTURE- BRIDGING ACADEMIA AND INDUSTRY

An invited lecture on Bridging Academia and Industry was conducted at by John Perumattam from State University San Jose, California. He delivered an insightful talk on Progress Towards Medicinal Chemistry, highlighting advancements in drug discovery and the importance of academia-industry collaboration. The session covered emerging trends, research challenges, and applications of medicinal chemistry in pharmaceutical development.

 

REV. DR. MATHEW THOTTIYIL MEMORIAL LECTURE

Rev. Dr. Mathew Thottiyil, was one of the pioneers who accelerated the growth of the department. Renowned for his knowledge in Chemistry and humane qualities, he led the department to great heights. The Mathew Thottiyil Endowment Lecture took place on December 12, 2024. Dr. Eugene Sebastain J. Nidiri, Principal Scientist, Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, served as the resource person for the event. The lecture focused on “Pesticides: Myths and Facts,”.

 

EXTENSION PROGRAMME – DETECTION OF FOOD ADULTRATION

An extension programme on detecting food adulteration at home was conducted on 29 and 30th August 2024, for the parents of students from the Department of Chemistry. The session aimed to create awareness about common adulterants in everyday food items and simple methods to detect them at home. Students demonstrated practical tests for identifying adulteration in milk, spices, grains, tea, and vegetables. Parents actively participated in the hands-on sessions, enhancing their understanding of food safety.

 

FIRE SAFETY MOCKDRILL

A fire safety mock drill was conducted on February 14, 2025, to educate students and staff on emergency preparedness. The drill began with a briefing on fire hazards, evacuation procedures, and the use of fire extinguishers.

 

PERIODIC TABLE DAY CELEBRATIONS

The National Periodic Day celebrations held on February 10, 2025, and inaugurated by Dr. Jyothish Kuthanapillil, were a vibrant tribute to the elements and chemistry’s significance. The event featured periodic table games, quiz and puzzles that tested participants’ knowledge and problem-solving skills.

 

ZERO HUNGER

As part of World Food Day initiatives, the Zero Hunger Program was conducted on 18 October 2024 at Anicadu Orphanage. Food packets were distributed to 75 inmates, including children and elderly residents. Students and staff actively participated in the event. The program successfully contributed to the well-being of the residents and highlighted the need for continued efforts in hunger eradication.

 

SOAP MAKING WORKSHOP

As part of experiential learning, a Soap Making Workshop was conducted on 3 February 2025 for third-year Chemistry students. The workshop aimed to provide hands-on experience in the formulation and production of soaps, reinforcing theoretical knowledge with practical application. During the session, students were guided through the saponification process, the selection of raw materials, and the role of different ingredients in determining the quality and properties of the final product.

 

PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST

As part of World Environment Day celebrations, an interdepartmental photography contest was organized for students on the theme Clean Campus, Green Campus. The competition aimed to encourage students to showcase their creativity while promoting environmental awareness and sustainability. Participants captured compelling images highlighting the beauty of a clean and green campus, emphasizing the importance of eco-friendly practices.

 

GIFT OF LEARNING

The Gift of Learning program was conducted on 8th June 2024 at Perumballoor, SH LP School to support underprivileged students in their educational journey. As part of this initiative, books and stationery items were distributed to needy students, ensuring they have the necessary resources for their studies

 

“Departmental Delight: Periodic Day Celebrations Spark Joy with Games and Puzzles Galore!”

Brushing Brilliance: Navigating the Horizon of Surface Coating Innovations with Dr. James Manikath

On January 22, 2024, the Chemistry Department had the privilege of hosting a compelling and insightful lecture by Dr. James Manikath, Technical manager, Luxury Paints, Australia, on the topic of “Innovations and Startups in Surface Coatings: Chemistry and Processes in the Manufacture of Paints.” Dr. Manikath, an industry expert with a wealth of experience, delivered a comprehensive presentation that delved into the latest innovations and emerging trends in surface coatings. He highlighted key advancements in the manufacturing processes of paints, shedding light on cutting-edge technologies and sustainable practices.

Attendees gained insights into the latest research and applications in liquid crystal technology for information display purposes.

The Chemistry Association Inauguration held on November 2 was a highly successful event marked by the esteemed presence of Chief Guest G. Anilkumar, Prof. School of Chemical Sciences, MG university Kottayam. Following the inauguration, a series of cultural events showcased the talents of students in dance, music, and drama, creating a lively and enjoyable atmosphere.

   

World Ozone Day Celebrations

On September 15th, in celebration of World Ozone Day, our department hosted a series of engaging activities to promote environmental awareness. These included a poster presentation competition, a seed collage competition, a bookmark-making competition using natural materials, and a word puzzle competition. Additionally, as a heartfelt gesture, we crafted seed bombs, made from clay, soil, and seeds, and gifted them to our teachers to emphasize the importance of environmental stewardship. The event was a resounding success, fostering awareness and creativity while conveying our collective responsibility to preserve the ozone layer and protect our planet.

   

Intercollegiate Project Presentation Competition- ‘Incendio 23’

The Intercollegiate Chemistry Project Presentation Competition, held on August 21, 2023, was a resounding success, serving as a platform for degree students from various colleges to showcase their innovative chemistry projects. The competition aimed to foster scientific curiosity and provide an opportunity for participants to share their research, insights, and discoveries in the field of chemistry. Each participating college selected their most promising projects and presented them to a panel of esteemed judges and fellow students. After rigorous evaluations by our panel of judges, the winning projects were selected based on criteria such as innovation, scientific rigor, and presentation skills.
