The green chemistry initiatives, such as the use of environment friendly chemicals and natural precursors, have got accolades worldwide as a way for sustainable development. The advantage of using natural products as starting materials is not only that it preserves petroleum resources, but also that the natural products have a wealth of structural diversity that is yet to be explored. In this regard, we focus on developing liquid crystalline materials and organo/hydro gels from natural monomers such as cardanol, glucose, maltose etc. A recent study has revealed that the presence of cardanol can lower the liquid crystal (LC) transition temperature and broaden the mesophase range of this class of cardanol azo dyes. We currently focus on developing materials which may have technological as well as pharmaceutical applications, using natural monomers.
