Soft Skill   Development Sessions

Soft Skill is  a term  often  associated  with  a  person’s  ‘EQ’,  the  cluster  of  personality  traits, social graces , communication language, personal habits,  friendliness  and  optimism that characterize   relationship     with other people. Every year, the dept. organizes Soft skill development seminar covering various aspects relating to communication, leadership, employability training, confidence building, Group Discussion, interview, CV preparation, professionalism and ethics, critical thinking and problem solving.

CMA Course

The PG and Research Department of Commerce is offering CMA (ICWA) Foundation and intermediate Programmes (Group 1 and 2) to the Undergraduates and Graduates for the last 13 years. The admission is open to the Nirmala College students and the public.  The classes are held on Saturdays and Sundays, especially to accommodate those who have their own jobs. Besides 100 hour training in computerized accounting is provided to the intermediate students. The College is co-ordinating the course as a Satellite Centre of the CMA Cochin Chapter. Admission to the course may be held through online (CMA Kolkota) or the Cochin Chapter or the Department of Commerce.

Commerce Association

An association of commerce students under the guidance of the faculty is functioning under the department. The Head of the Department is the ex-officio president of the association. The secretary to the association is elected from the degree and postgraduate students under secret ballot system along with general elections to the college union. The association is intended to provide a common platform to the commerce students in developing their co-curricular activities. The association is actively engaged in carrying out the following activities.

  • Conducting intercollegiate Quiz Competitions
  • Commerce Fest
  • Arranging workshops on entrepreneurship development programmes
  • Conducting interdepartmental arts, sports and cultural competitions
  • Participating in interdepartmental arts, sports and cultural competitions
  • Charity activities such as helping economically weaker students in buying books, financial support, visit to orphanages, etc.
  • Arranging lectures of expert practitioners in the field of banking, accounting, stock broking, tax consultancy, etc.
  • Arranging class wise visit to industrial establishments.

 

DEUS VULT

In order to enhance creativity, management and organization skills among students, the department conducts an intercollegiate commerce fest since 2007. It is named as Deus Vult meaning ‘God wills it’. Students from colleges in different parts of Kerala compete in ten different events namely Treasure Hunt, Business Quiz, Best Management Team, IPL Auction, Ad-Film making, spot choreography, HR game, Cricket, 3’s Football, Photography competition, etc. 550 students from around 40 colleges participated in the latest version of Deus Vult. Cultural programmes of the students add colours to the fest. With the combined effort of teachers and the students, Commerce Department successfully conducts the one day business extravaganza in flying colours.

UGC NET Coaching

The department organises UGC NET Coaching classes for the M Com students. The coaching classes started in October 2014 and continued till December. Classes were handled by faculties from SB college Changanassery, M.A College Kothamangalam, BAM College Thuruthikkad, Newman College, Thodupuzha, SJCET School of Management Studies Pala and Nirmala College, Muvattupuzha. 34 students participated in the coaching class 2019-20.

Commerce Fraternity of Nirmala

It is an educational and charity initiative from Research and PG Department of Commerce, Nirmala College Muvattupuzha. It is an unregistered Trust with written byelaws and is formed on 16/12/2017. It has 210 ordinary members and 7 life members. It is managed by the Executive Committee elected in the Annual General Meeting. It maintains a bank account with South Indian Bank. It aims to promote the habit of charity among the members and to provide an opportunity to the student members to acquaint themselves with the practical sides of accounts of not-for profit making organizations and auditing books and accounts.

It maintains a fund called Sujith Fund to provide financial assistance to Mr. Sujith TG, an alumnus, under prolonged medical treatment. The contribution towards this fund amounts to Rs.16,990 for the year 2017-18 and the amount released during the period was Rs. 5,800. The members of the fraternity visited Providence Home Karakkunnam, an orphanage, on 31/03/2018 and gave away goods worth Rs.10,400.

The surplus as per the audited Income and Expenditure account of the fraternity for the year 2017-18 is Rs.12,254 and its Balance Sheet total as on 31-03-2018 is Rs.30,714.

The second general body meeting held on 24/01/2019 elected the executive committee for the year 2018-2019(till next AGM) .The committee met 4 times during the year.The teachers of the department contributed Rs 7000 towards  Sujith Fund and Rs 20300 has been released from the fund in monthly instalments. The bank balance of the fraternity amounted to Rs 21,684 on 31st March 2019.The excess as per Income and Expenditure of the year is Rs 4520.

RELEASE OF COMMERCE MAGAZINE

For the first time in the history of Nirmala College, Muvattupuzha, the Department of Commerce released the first e-magazine in 2015 named “EXOUSIA 2015”, The Power to Act. In 2016, students prepared a magazine named ‘Rythms’. A manuscript magazine was prepared in 2017.

 

Programs for Slow Learners   and Advanced Learners

The post graduate and research department of commerce considered both the   advanced   learners and slow learners with great concern. For the advanced learners the department  has organised   hands on training in the  data analysis software,  that is, Statistical Package for Social Sciences  research. This is offered to the final year post graduate students of the department. It is conducted in collaboration with the Statistic department. In addition to  the data analysis training the students are given  orientation and guidance in  preparing  research papers  and  in presenting  papers  in the national and international conferences. A clear  insight regarding  how a research article  of international standards have to be prepared is also  imparted as part of this training. The degree students are being provided with opportunities to know   about different career opportunities and soft skills required to attain greater position in life. For this purpose personality development programmes, career guidance programmes  and class regarding  innovative learning resources  are also being provided to them. The students belonging to the class of advanced learners are also encouraged  to participate  and  learn  e-resources and e-resources especially  from MOOC like platforms which is   (Massive Online Open Courses) offered by  various national and  international universities.

For the slow learners   the department offers remedial coaching especially in the subjects in which   students are found to  score lower marks. Moreover, the weaker students are  given personal counselling  and in certain occasions  their  parents are being called  to meet the  concerned teachers  and guidance is also provided  to them to  ensure that the students are  learning well. Simple, brief   and easy to learn   materials are also provided   to the slow learners. Sometimes the students are made to sit after regular study hours   so that they can learn the topics more comfortably and they can   have good time for interaction   with concerned teachers. As a result of these   programmes  for the advanced  learners and  slow learners  the   6 P.G students  have presented papers in national and international journals.  Moreover,  3 articles of the students were also  published in the  ISBN journals  too. The slow learners shown good progress in learning  as a result of remedial coaching programme.

 

 SEMINAR ON RIGHT TO INFORMATION ACT

The Post Graduate and Research   Department of Commerce   organised a one day seminar on Right to Information Act on 17th July 2016. The welcome address was given by Dr Johnson Varghese, Head of the Department. The chief resource person of the seminar was Sri .Vincent   M   Paul (Chief Information Officer) . The progamme was   inaugurated by Sri. Madhavan (Hon’ble  Vigilance Enquiry Commissioner& Special Judge Muvattupuzha). The post graduate and graduate students of the department attended  the seminar. The Students caught a clear and unambigus   idea    regarding   Right to information Act and   how to   use the Act effectively for social benefit. Dr. T.M Joseph, Principal, delivered the presidential address. Adv. Jimmy Jose, Secretary Legal Service Committee Muvatupuzha felicitated on the occasion. Vote of thanks was delivered by Adv. Baby Kuriakose and the function ended with   national anthem.

 

 

Workshop on Research Methodology and Statistical Analysis

The Department organised a three day Workshop on Research Methodology and Statistical Analysis on 24th, 25th&26th August 2017. The chief resource persons were Dr. Sebastian Rupert Mampilly, ( Professor, CUSAT),  Dr. T M Jacob (Associate Professor, P.G & Research Department of Statistics,  Nirmala College Muvattupuzha)and Dr. Ajimon George (Associate Professor, Department of Commerce, Marian College, Kuttikkanam). Twenty Ph. D research scholars from various Research Centers across the state participated in the workshop.

 

 

Inter collegiate Business Quiz Competition

The Department organized a general quiz competition on 13/02/2018 for the students of different departments of the college. Sixteen teams participated in the programme. Physics and Mathematics Departments secured the first and second positions respectively. The quiz master was Sri. Philip Augustine (Associate Professor, Department of Chemistry Nirmala College Muvattupuzha). It also organized an inter-collegiate businessquiz competition on14/02/2018. The  quiz master of  was Mr. Abhijith P S ( Research Scholar, S B College, Changanassery). Nineteen teams participated in the competition.  Henry Baker College Melukavu and  S B College Changanassery won the first and second positions respectively. Recruitment Oriented Training

Both the UG and PG students were provided with job oriented training programmes which focused on improving the communication, group discussion and interview skills of the students.

Seminar on Certified Financial Planning-A professional course

The department of commerce, Nirmala College, Muvattupuzha conducted a seminar on the topic “Certified Financial Planning” on 14th November 2014 which was conducted by the resource persons Mrs. Maya and Mr.Vyshak from Chennai. The seminar was discussed about the professional course named CFP which provide greater opportunities in banking, non- banking and other companies. The seminar covered the opportunities of this particular course. Many of the MNCs, auditing companies, insurance companies, banking institutions and non-banking institutions etc requires CFP officers every year.

  • Seminar on Business Communication

The seminar covers various aspects of business communication like recent trends in business communication, various modes of communication, effective implementation of communication channels in an organisation. The seminar inculcated attractive power-point presentations and demonstrations.

  • Seminar on High tech Farming

The seminar emphasized the importance of organic farming and also explained how the soil fertility and minimal usage of chemical content helps in yielding better farming results. The important message that was conveyed through the seminar was how the youth should utilize and explore the various opportunities in the field of agriculture.

  • Cyber law: Relevance in e-generation

As a part of Legal Day Celebrations, Niyamajyothi and Department of Commerce together organised a seminar on cyber law: relevance in e-generation on 9th January 2015 at college Auditorium for all the students of Nirmala College. Seminar was led by Mr.Vinayakumar,  ACP, Hi-Tech Cell from Police Headquarters, Trivandrum.

 

  • Seminar on Financial Literacy

A seminar on Financial Literacy was conducted on 22/02/2018. Mr. Binu V.S. Assistant Professor at SCMS School of Management and Technology was the chief resource person.

 

 

Participation of Students in Intercollegiate Events

It has been a practice of the department to motivate students to participate in various curricular and co-curricular activities organized or arranged by other institutions. Accordingly students participated in the programmes conducted by colleges in and around Kerala,viz., Bharathmatha College Choondi, Viswajyothi College of Engineering & Technology Vazhakkulam, Illahia Arts & Science College Muvattupuzha, Rajagiri College Kalammasery, Newman College Thodupuzha, SSV College Perumbavoor,  St Alberts college, Ernakulam, Mount Carmel Karukedam, CMS College Kottayam, BCM College Kottayam, Marian College Kuttikanam, S.H College Thevara, Marian AccademyPuthuppady.

 

 

Award Ceremony for Rank Holder and Net Qualifiers

The department organised a programme to honour Ms. Akhila Vijayan who secured first rank in M.G. university  M.com( finance) examination in the academic year 2016-2017. The net qualifiers of the department – Anjaly C., Prasad TGopi and  Arya Manmadhan were also honoured on the occasion. Dr. T.M. Joseph delivered the keynote address and Dr. James Mathew (HoD) delivered the presidential address. Awards were distributed to the rank holder and the net qualifiers.

 

 

 

Orphanage Visit

The second year B.Com students along with the faculty visited an orphanage in Karakunnam, Muvattupuzha on 10/03/2018. The students staged different programmes for the inmates and provided them with basic necessities like toilet soaps, washing powder, notebooks, etc.

Faculty Development Programme

Department of commerce Nirmala College Muvattupuzha has organised a one day faculty development programme on “Teaching SPSS at Undergraduate level” on 27th November,2019, Wednesday. Around 60 Teachers from various colleges  attended the program. Dr. Tejil Thomas, Asst. Professor, St. Thomas College Pala was the resource person.
