Nirmala College was recognised as a Research Centre for Ph.D. in Commerce on 1st January 2000. Dr. K. G. Jose, Dr. Simon G Thattil, Dr. James Mathew and Dr. G. S. Gireesh Kumar serve as the Research Guides of the Research Centre. At present, there are fifteen research scholars doing Ph.D. under the Research Department of Commerce. Twenty Research Scholars from this Department have already been awarded Ph.D. in Commerce during the last 18 years.

Zoology
Department of Zoology has been approved to the status of a Research Department by Mahatma Gandhi University on 16th December 2017 with necessary orders issued ( No 7349/AV1/1/RC/1569/2016/academic dated 16/12/2017).

UGC introduced Career Oriented Programme for vocationalising the undergraduate education. The students, while pursuing their degree programmes, can opt for these courses which will enhance their skills and employment opportunities. At the end of the first year of education, students will be provided with a Certificate, in the second year - a Diploma, and in the third year - an Advanced Diploma along with their conventional degrees. The Certificate/ Diploma/ Advanced Diploma will be awarded by the University. These courses are interdisciplinary in nature and hence students of any degree programme can opt for the courses.

MUSH ROOM CULTIVATION

A mushroom is the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus. Mushrooms are being used as food and medicine. Their cultivation on extensive scale can help solve many problems of global importance. Edible mushrooms contain a high percentage of protein, all indispensable amino acids, and vitamins B-complex and other biochemical compounds. Consumption of mushrooms slows down the spread and effect of cancer, heart disease and HIV/AIDS by boosting immune system.

APICULTURE

Beekeeping (apiculture) is the maintenance of honey bee colonies. A beekeeper keeps bees in order to collect the honey and other products including beeswax, pollen, and royal jelly that the hive produces, to pollinate crops, or to produce bees for sale to other beekeepers. Natural honey is sweet, pleasant smelling, and delicious. It can also be artificially and naturally flavoured with nuts and spices.

GARDENING

Gardening is the practice of growing and cultivating plants as part of horticulture. In gardens, ornamental plants are often grown for their flowers, foliage, or overall appearance; useful plants, such as root vegetables, leaf vegetables, fruits, and herbs, are grown for consumption, for use as dyes, or for medicinal or cosmetic use. Gardening is considered to be an activity of relaxation for many people. Gardening may be very specialized, with only one type ofplant grown, or involve a large number of different plants in mixed plantings.

TISSUE CULTURE

Tissue culture is the growth of tissues or cells separate from the organism. This is typically facilitated via use of a liquid,semi-solid, or solid growth medium, such as broth or agar. Tissue culture commonly refers to the culture ofplant tissues. Tissue culture can be used to develop plant saplings for cultivation.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Information technology has a vital role in the field of life science as it helps to extend its scope. Knowledge in IT helps us todevelop methods and software tools for storing, retrieving, organizing and analysing biological data. As an interdisciplinary field, bioinformatics combines computer science, statistics, mathematics and engineering to study and process biological data.

FLORICULTURE

Floriculture, or flower farming, is a discipline of horticulture concerned with the cultivation of flowering and ornamental plants for gardens and for floral industry. The development, via plant breeding, of new varieties is a major occupation of floriculturists.

HORTICULTURE

Horticulture is the branch of agriculture that deals with the art, science, technology, and business of plant cultivation. It includes the cultivation of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, herbs, sprouts, mushrooms, algae, flowers, seaweeds and non­food crops such as grass and ornamental trees and plants. It also includes plant conservation, landscape restoration, landscape and garden design, construction, and maintenance, and arboriculture.

FOOD TECHNOLOGY

Food technology is a branch of science in which the food science is applied in the manufacture and preservation of food products. The food technologists study the chemical, physical and microbiological makeup of the food. The food is processed, preserved, packaged and stored according to the specifications by industry and government. The research and development in food technology has resulted into the production of safe and nutritious foods
